چکیده

Although several new tone-mapping operators are proposed each year, there is no reliable method to validate their performance or to tell how different they are from one another. In order to analyze and understand the behavior of tone-mapping operators, we model their mechanisms by fitting a generic operator to an HDR image and its tone-mapped LDR rendering. We demonstrate that the majority of both global and local tone-mapping operators can be well approximated by computationally inexpensive image processing operations, such as a perpixel tone curve, a modulation transfer function and color saturation adjustment. The results produced by such a generic tone-mapping algorithm are often visually indistinguishable from much more expensive algorithms, such as the bilateral filter. We show the usefulness of our generic tone-mapper in backward-compatible HDR image compression, the black-box analysis of existing tone mapping algorithms and the synthesis of new algorithms that are combination of existing operators.

Analysis of Reproducing Real-World Appearance on Displays of Varying Dynamic Range

We conduct a series of experiments to investigate the desired properties of a tone mapping operator (TMO) and to design such an operator based on subjective data. We propose a novel approach to the tone mapping problem, in which the tone mapping parameters are determined based on the data from subjective experiments, rather than an image processing algorithm or a visual model. To collect this d...

Flicker reduction in tone mapped high dynamic range video

In order to display a high dynamic range (HDR) video on a regular low dynamic range (LDR) screen, it needs to be tone mapped. A great number of tone mapping (TM) operators exist – most of them designed to tone map one image at a time. Using them on each frame of an HDR video individually leads to flicker in the resulting sequence. In our work, we analyze three tone mapping operators with respec...

Robust Parameter Estimation for Tone Mapping Operator

Tone Mapping Operators are used to compress a large range of pixel luminances into a smaller range that is suitable for display on devices with limited dynamic range. This work presents effective and easy to use Tone Mapping Operator based on last ideas in this direction. The estimation process uses sampling method. Essential attention was devoted to providing robustness of algorithm parameter ...

A GPU-friendly method for high dynamic range texture compression using inverse tone mapping

In recent years, High Dynamic Range Textures (HDRTs) have been frequently used in real-time applications and video-games to enhance realism. Unfortunately, HDRTs consume a considerable amount of memory, and efficient compression methods are not straightforward to implement on modern GPUs. We propose a framework for efficient HDRT compression using tone mapping and its dual, inverse tone mapping...
